WHAT IS JIU-JITSU?
LEARN ABOUT RIVAL JIU-JITSU PROGRAMS
HOW JIU-JITSU WORKS
Jiu-Jitsu is often called "the gentle art" because it allows a smaller, weaker person to defend themselves and overcome a larger adversary using technique rather than brute strength. Practitioners use leverage, angles, body mechanics, and timing to gain positional control and apply submissions that can end a fight or force a tap-out in training. Techniques are taught progressively, allowing even brand-new students to build real skills quickly and safely.
Training typically begins with a warm-up and technical instruction, followed by drilling (repetition of specific movements) and live sparring. The goal is not just to memorize moves, but to develop instinctual timing, balance, and awareness that can be applied under pressure.
GI VS. NO-GI JIU-JITSU
At Rival Jiu-Jitsu, we offer both
Gi and
No-Gi classes. In
Gi training, students wear a traditional kimono (uniform) that allows for grips and specific techniques involving the fabric. In
No-Gi, students wear rash guards and shorts, and the pace is often faster, relying more on body positioning and underhooks rather than grip fighting.
Both formats develop different skills and are equally valuable. That’s why our schedule rotates between the two styles, allowing students to become well-rounded grapplers and adapt to any environment—whether they’re training for fitness, competition, or self-defense.
WHO SHOULD TRAIN JIU-JITSU?
BJJ is for everyone. Whether you’re a total beginner who’s never done martial arts before or a former athlete looking for a new challenge, Jiu-Jitsu provides a structure that meets you where you are and pushes you to grow. At Rival, our community includes adults from all walks of life—teachers, nurses, business owners, engineers, parents, and students—all committed to personal development through martial arts training.
Some people come to Jiu-Jitsu for fitness. Others are drawn to its mental benefits, like stress relief, focus, and confidence. Many come for the real-world self-defense skills it offers. And some want to compete. Whatever your reason, you’ll find a place at Rival Jiu-Jitsu that supports your goals and helps you reach them.
THE BENEFITS OF JIU-JITSU TRAINING
Training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers a wide range of physical, mental, and emotional benefits. On a physical level, BJJ builds strength, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, and functional movement. It’s a full-body workout that doesn’t feel like one because you’re constantly learning and solving problems on the mat.
Mentally, Jiu-Jitsu teaches patience, resilience, and problem-solving under pressure. Every round of sparring is like a physical chess match, requiring you to stay calm and think critically while in motion. Emotionally, students often report feeling more confident, more grounded, and more capable in everyday life.
Most importantly, it’s a sustainable, long-term path to better health and personal growth. At Rival, we train with purpose—not just to sweat, but to develop mastery over time.
IS JIU-JITSU SAFE?
Safety is a core value at Rival Jiu-Jitsu. Our instructors carefully monitor all classes, and we create a culture where students are encouraged to train hard while always respecting their partners. Submissions are taught responsibly, and tapping out is part of the learning process, not a failure.
Beginners are never thrown into high-intensity sparring. You’ll be guided step by step, with controlled movements and clear expectations. Our ego-free environment means that everyone is there to help one another grow.
